SKIN PH
Why is an acidic pH level important to the skin?
Our skin is naturally acidic, on a scale from 3.5 - 5.0. Keeping it around this range helps maintain the skin’s microbiome balance and is important for skin health. One of the main functions of our skin barrier is to keep a balanced hydration and moisture levels. A lot of cleansers and skincare on the market actually disrupt our skin’s acid mantle and microbiome levels, causing it to be on the more alkaline side and unbalancing the skin. This in turn could cause dehydration, lack of moisture, acne, rosacea, eczema and psoriasis. The acid mantle is essential to skin health; it’s a protective film covering our skin which is actually made up of our naturally producing sebum and sweat. What’s interesting about skin acidity is that bacteria cannot properly thrive in an acidic environment, that is why most acne patients actually do have a disrupted skin pH level.
Signs that your skin’s pH are disturbed:
• Skin Sensitivity.
A lot of my clients that I see think they have sensitive or reactive skin, when in turn it’s actually an unbalanced skin pH. Having a compromised barrier leads to skin that can easily feel irritated. That is why using the proper skin routine your esthetician recommends is highly important and vital to the results your skin can achieve! Once you start using skincare that respect’s your skin’s pH levels and starts to balance it out, most patients can see and feel the difference in their skin.
• Inflammatory Skin Conditions.
Again, when skin pH is in an alkaline state, there is a high probability of bacterial growth on the skin which can contribute to acne. Having an unbalanced microbiome leads to the skin being more prone to inflammation; this can cause a reaction of acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, yeast & fungal infections and even premature aging.
•Dry, Flaky, Tight Skin.
As I mentioned earlier, the main purpose of a balanced skin microbiome and barrier is the function to keep it hydrated and moisturized. When skin is alkaline, our moisture and hydration balances are thrown way off. If your skin is constantly feeling dry, flaky and tight to no avail, your skin’s pH levels are unbalanced
