Braces are common, but not normal. Crowded teeth are a symptom of larger underlying issues.

Rather than just straightening teeth- we should be addressing the development of the jaws and the functional issues that lead to underdevelopment. Not doing so can contribute to developing further breathing or sleep issues later on, or the teeth relapsing!

Did you know this information when you or your child were getting braces? 👅

If you are struggling to find an airway focused provider then this post is for you!

Here’s my recommendations on how to find one ☺️

One of the benefits of working with a myofunctional therapist is we help you determine what kind of providers you may need and find the ones that are best. 💕

If you’re utilizing a directory- don’t go to someone just because they are listed, make sure you look through their website and services to verify they are in line with what you are wanting.

Using Facebook communities is so helpful! Look for local tongue-tie or expansion support communities!

These 3 MOST COMMON and PERSISTENT signs caused by mouth breathing I see as a Myofunctional Therapist

•White Coating on the Tongue

Because mouth breathing dries out the mouth, it tends to cling to debris and other bacteria more than nasal breathing tongue resulting in the presence of bad breath and other dental problems.

•Vaulted or Narrow Roof of Mouth

Also referred to a narrow palate. This is pronounced in mouth breathers because of the tongue inability to rest at the roof of the mouth resulting in the tongue not being able to act as a natural expander to the mouth, which can lead to this type of narrow growth

•Bleeding Gums and High Cavity Risk

Similar to what causes a white coated tongue and bad breath, the lack of saliva in the mouth due to mouth breathing leads to dried out gums which causes inflammation, this inflammation can progress to bone loss. The saliva also acts as a protective barrier to the teeth, so when absent, you are more likely to be at risk for cavities!

Because of these things It is important for everyone at any age to correct their mouth breathing habit!

Myofunctional therapy helps you become a 24/7 nasal breather! 👃🏼😎

What other issues do you suspect comes from mouth breathing?

The presence of a narrow palate can indicate improper tongue function and a smaller airway size. So it’s important to know how to recognize signs of a narrow palate, and it has nothing to do with aesthetics!

I have an at home checklist to look for other symptoms that can correlate with having a narrow palate. If you suspect these issues get evaluated by an airway knowledgeable dentist or myofunctional therapist.

I offer virtual myofunctional evaluations for kids and adults ☺️🫶🏼

These are some of the biggest signs/symptoms of oral and airway dysfunction that dentists SHOULD be referring to a myofunctional therapist.

🔹 Crowded Teeth or Malocclusion

🔹 Mouth Breathing

🔹 Tethered Oral Tissues: Tongue ties, lip ties, and cheek ties etc.

🔹 Noxious Oral Habits: Habits like digit sucking or nail biting can harm dentition

🔹 Bruxism or TMJ Issues

Unfortunately a majority of the dental field is still under utilizing myofunctional therapy in their practices, but im sensing an amazing shift in field, that it is becoming more airway focused!

It has never been a better time to be in the myofunctional therapy field. 😊💕

The forces from the tongue and muscles of the face guide the way that the maxilla and muscles of the face grow. The tongue should rest up on the maxilla (the palate) to encourage the jaws to grow wide and forward!

Myofunctional therapy is used to correct the function of the muscles of the face and mouth. During development, this can lead to more optimal jaw development!
