My mom was from the Sunflower state (Kansas), so when she passed away 4 years ago the sunflower became very personal to me.

Did you know that sunflowers face the rising sun every morning? They turn with the sun as the day goes on. Just to turn back to the east to face the sun the next morning.

They do this until they’re old and are always facing east. Waiting for bees to use their pollen for new flowers.

Now when I get sunflowers I’m reminded of my dear mother and that I should always ‘face the sun’ in life.

Even when it gets dark we must return to the light and continue on with what gives us life.

Doing hair for a fashion show at the Earth Day Festival in St. Louis yesterday I kept seeing sunflowers and I knew she was there with me.

She would be SO proud of where I am today, I just hate that she left me before I could show her what I’m really capable of.
