The FDA withdrew the proposed rule that would have finally made asbestos testing mandatory for talc-based makeup. The rule was not in effect yet, but it was about to become the first regulation in U.S. history that required companies to prove talc was asbestos-free before selling it. Because it was withdrawn, nothing becomes mandatory. There has never been a law in the United States requiring companies to test talc cosmetics for asbestos, and there still isn’t. We are now back to voluntary testing, which means corporations get to decide for themselves whether to test, and that has never worked in our favor. The FDA says it might issue a new rule someday, but there is no timeline and no guarantee. And under the Trump administration, we cannot take industry-safety promises at face value. Cosmetic companies have every financial incentive not to test because proper asbestos testing is expensive, and skipping it protects profits. That is the story, not fear, not exaggeration, not misinformation. Just the reality: a rule that would have protected us was withdrawn before it could take effect.
