Let’s debunk some common skincare myths together👇🏼
☀️🤳SPF is an essential skincare step that is needed both indoors and outdoors. For obvious reasons, when you’re outside you are directly exposed to harsh sunlight which can cause premature aging (fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots) as well as contribute to skin cancer. Even indoors, the sunlight can still reach your skin (think about how houseplants still get sunlight when they’re inside). Research has also found that our devices (tv’s, computers, phones, tablets) emit blue light that is even more damaging to the skin than UV from the sun!
🧴 Although oily skin may feel like it is moisturized by itself, there is a difference between oil in the skin and the moisturizer we use. Moisturizer helps to balance out the moisture present in our skin, which in turn assists in oil production. If the skin is too dry, more oil is produced to compensate. Therefore, by using more moisturizer you will help to regulate and balance out your skin, keeping it healthy. You can opt in lightweight moisturizers as well, such as gel-based moisturizers, to avoid that feeling of too much buildup on the skin.
💦 Drinking water is super important in not only skin health but our overall body health. It is the lubricant we need for all of our body functions, including our skin. However it is not the cure-all when it comes to skin issues. So while it is still important to ensure you’re drinking enough water to ensure your skin can function as needed, it will not be the one thing to fix your acne or wrinkles. Only professional skincare can help ensure that.
💎 Yes, us estheticians are always preaching about exfoliating to allow fresh, new skin to come to the surface. However there is such a thing as OVER exfoliating. If you’re exfoliating everyday, you’re not giving your skin a chance to regenerate itself and therefore are doing more damage than good. For dry or normal skin, exfoliate 2-3 times per week. For oily skin, you can bump it up to 3-4 times per week. Make sure to alternate days to give your skin time to recover!
