Voyage Hues

This month's we round out by honoring those who took part in the in 1969. You've probably heard stories about Marsha P Johnson (who was not actually present, I recently learned!) and other q***r people including BIPOC and trans people who bravely stood against the cops. But I want to take a moment to mention someone you might not know about.

Dave Van Ronk was a musician in the Greenwich neighborhood, just an ordinary straight white guy with no business in a gay bar like the Stonewall. He was having dinner nearby when he heard the commotion, went out into the street and immediately started throwing stuff at the cops along with everyone else. He was one of the first people arrested and was beaten alongside the others.

We often see these heroes of major events like the Stonewall and have trouble seeing ourselves in their shoes. Maybe you're not a brave, powerful Black trans woman. Maybe you're not even q***r and don't think you're affected by the violence being perpetrated by our government. But you don't have to be any of those things to see injustice and stand in solidarity. Be like Dave. Just put down your fork and grab a brick.

This month's theme was PETS 🐾 My house is currently run by one blue-eyed torbie named Maddy. I did my best to hand paint her orange blaze and mottled features 🩵 I used as the base.
