Rainy day at the office here in San Antonio by McCallister Park, so the plants get to live outside for a while, and that "fresh rain on the pavement" smell drifts into the massage room.

New research is backing up what I try to teach my clients and Massage students about pain science: pain relief isn’t about how hard someone presses. It’s about how safe, relevant, and tolerable that input feels to your nervous system.
Two people can receive the same amount of pressure and have completely different outcomes. Why? Because pain isn’t produced in tissue alone…it’s an experience shaped by context, expectation, past injury, stress, and how well your brain can interpret what’s happening.
Key findings of that research:
✔️Higher pressure did not reliably produce better outcomes
✔️Perceived comfort, safety, and individual tolerance mattered more than force
✔️People receiving “lighter” or moderate pressure experienced comparable improvements in pain and function
✔️Excessive pressure increased guarding and threat responses in some participants
When pressure crosses your system’s threshold, the body guards. Pressure and depth are two different things. I know I have the right pressure, regardless of depth,.when blood flow changes, breathing shifts, layers feel melty.
I try to get deeper through feeling and responding to your layers of tissue, sinking till we find it or scrolling deeper each pass, not pushing. I try to use weight, time, angle, and responsiveness to help your tissues make their own changes… it does feel good to just stand there and get deeper through time and little tilts of my feet or body, when we both click into that sensation, that's the fun stuff, but the actual amount of pressure used is totally different every session for everyone.
BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders (2025)
“Does pressure matter?”
DOI: 10.1186/s12891-025-08741-6
Clinical takeaway:
Depth alone is not a treatment variable. The nervous system’s interpretation of pressure determines whether it helps or hinders.

Here's a recent 1-hour Myofascial Barefoot Massage session focusing on some low back/hip and shoulder pain for this client.
I used deep, slow pressure that grabbed onto deep fascial layers that surround muscle groups and created a grip and drag sensation while he moved and mobilized underneath and pulled away from that pressure. This helps me to recreate sliding between layers of all this tissue, rather than a feeling of stiff or stuckness, and helps reintroduce your mind to your body as you concentrate on moving in ways that feel useful under pressure.
This active stretch therapy mixed with myofascial pressure really helps your nervous system get better at recognizing what and where you feel something, and helps you learn how to heal on your own by better sensing the potential range of intensity and limits of your tissue layers.
Your body knows how to get better, it knows how not to be in pain constantly... it's just overstimulated, overwhelmed and annoyed. (Aren't we all?!)
Come get underfoot with me, and in these massages that make you work on yourself a little with me, we can Heel that stuff together. 👣🫶🏼

I recently had the opportunity to receive a traditional Hawaiian Kua Lua barefoot session right on the coastline in Hawaii. The setting was pure magic... the ocean waves crashing so close, the pacing timed perfectly with the tide, a truly beautiful, unforgettable experience.
But as a clinical bodyworker, my brain never completely shuts off. 🤓
While I sat in deep respect for the history and the soul of that ancient lineage, looking at the work through the lens of all the training I've had was revealing. Even though the bodywork itself and the vibes of the moment were beautiful, it was still a routine. The angles, the compressions, and the depths were done the exact same way on both sides, without a real clinical reason or a deep focus on joint mobilization and alignment. To be fair, this was a vacation massage, and your first massage with anyone is always pretty basic in comparison to the potential that will unfold with time. I know that with repeat visits it would get more and more intricate and customized. This session in Hawaii was focused on the pure experience of the traditional work so that I could feel it's roots.
It gave me an incredible amount of perspective on the evolution of Barefoot Massage worldwide and what I offer my clients here at Heeling Sole. It brought me right back to the weight of what I teach and practice every single day. I don't just follow a script or a history book... I look at your alignment and I change my strategy to fit exactly what your nervous system and your tissue need in that moment.
I came home with a massive wave of gratitude for what I've built back home based on all that I continue to experience in the world of Barefoot Massage. I keep feeling what is "out there" to experience why I do what I do when I teach and when I massage. You don’t have to book a flight to get elite, deeply transformative barefoot work... We can change your structure and outlook on the moment right here under my feets in San Antonio at Heeling Sole!
(Although if you ever get the chance to receive Kua Lua, Chavutti Thirumal, or a very traditional Shiatsu session in another country, you should!)

It's me, 'Hi!' Jeni Spring from Heeling Sole Barefoot Massage, and today I'm here to remind you to check in on that POSTURE of yours! (Sent with love, not shame)
Good posture can become an effortless habit with practice of awareness. Stand up, lets try this together:
Stand with your legs and feet under you for support.
For a few moments, practice what ever you've learned about posture.
Maybe you learned to learned to lift your chest or pull in your belly. Try that.
Maybe you learned to press your shoulders down or tuck your pelvis. Try that.
Maybe I gave you a cue at one point that really felt great. Try all those things.
Now undo all of this, and try something else.
Gently organize your bones. (Whaaaaaat?) Just think about your bones and where they are. See if you notice where your stance or posture feel like they are doing extra work. Turn on your inner X-ray vision.
Get grounded, relax. Imagine your bones breathing in sync with your breath.
Can you find ease where there is tension in your body?
What movement or postural adjustment do you feel like you need to make to soften what is tight?
Can you soften the muscles around your jaw, shoulders and even..... your butt?
Can you feel the length of your body?
OK now notice if you feel a longer, stronger "up-rightness" in your presense and your bones. Where does this feel effortless?
Keep scrolling through a full body check like this and as you find ease in one place of your body, try to reorganize everything around that so it's easy everywhere.
There's no wrong answer, this was just an interruption in your day to reconnect you to your body. I hope you found it easier than expected.
I'm here whenever you need some 'Heeling':

Your body has an inner GPS… and it’s the key to getting past persistent, reoccurring pain patterns. It's how you won't need massage so much to have great weeks anymore. It's how I help my clients in San Antonio come to me less often once they learn this embodiment hack.
It’s interoception: your ability to sense what’s happening inside you in real time.
During your massage at Heeling Sole with me, Jeni Spring, we’re not just working with muscles. We’re working with your awareness. Here are a few simple ways to tune in while you’re on the table and in your day-to-day life:
✨ Notice your internal “yes” and “no.”
Instead of judging a sensation as good or bad, try naming it. Warmth, pressure, stretching, pulsing. Many of my teachers emphasize that labeling sensation lowers threat and increases clarity.
✨ Feel the waves, not the storms.
If something feels intense, shift your attention to your breath or to a nearby calmer zone in your body. This anchors your nervous system so the stronger sensation feels more manageable.
✨ Track the edges.
Follow a sensation for three breaths. Does it expand… shrink… move… soften… or simply stay the same? This is how you build interoceptive accuracy and teach your brain that safe input is truly safe.
✨ Practice micro check-ins outside the massage room.
Pause once today and scan from collarbones to low belly. What’s tight… floaty… tired… energized? You don’t have to fix anything. Just noticing is the rep.
If you want to build these skills between sessions, you can do these mindfulness exercises during any activity - waiting in line, driving, working at your desk... I’ve also got Jill Millers self-massage balls re-stocked here in the office. They’re perfect for self care, nervous system downshifting, and reconnecting with the “you” inside your body.
