What muscles make up the calf? The two main ones are the soleus and gastrocnemius. These muscles work to flex the knee and ankle, and are important for stabilizing the knee, ankle, and foot. When training it is important to work the calves, especially for runners - having strong calf muscles can lower your risk of ankle sprains and shin splints!
