It’s 4 months today since my Dad died. It sounds like such a short amount of time but it feels like he’s been gone so long.
My friend, Caroline texted:
“Being without the physical presence of one of the people you love most in this world can feel like eternity.”
It’s true. Time warps and folds into itself. Memories with him from childhood and even younger have found their way back to me.
It’s like I’ve lived a whole lifetime now without him—all ages of me feeling and experiencing life without him.
I miss you, Dad. We all do.

My incredible Dad passed on last Saturday. I was so thankful to be there to send him off. Here’s part of the obituary my mom, brother & I wrote for him:
We are saddened to announce the death of Dolph Frederick Becker, an incredible husband & father. Dolph passed away at the age of 79, surrounded by family, on October 8 in Bloomfield, CT. Dolph was an incredibly kind, generous and gentle person. People gravitated to him for advice, conversation and laughter. He was as quick to crack a joke, as he was to help a family member or friend in need, with his wisdom and guidance. He was born March 5,1943 in Hartford, CT to Kathryn & Russell Becker. He attended Hartford High where he met his wife Marjorie (Midge) Kamins – whom he loved so much he married twice in 1966 & 1967. Dolph was voted "Most Likely to Succeed" in High School. He graduated in 1965 from Princeton University where he majored in History. From there he moved to Boston, not only to work for Prudential, but because Midge was there. Ultimately they married & started a family in Connecticut, where he would spend his life. Dolph was self-employed as a financial planner and life insurance agent and developed close friendships with many of his clients. He was a valued and trusted person. Dolph was a lover of nature. Some of his fondest memories were of camping & hiking trips. He was well known to disappear into Penwood park for hours of hiking with his beloved Golden Retriever, Sassy. He also enjoyed travels to England, Mexico, Cape Cod & California. As if his life wasn't busy enough, he successfully managed the Bloomfield Scholarship Foundation & treasury of the Penwood Association successfully almost up until his death. He was an avid sports fan - a lover of the Red Sox, Whalers, UCONN & Princeton teams, but he truly loved his family the most. His children credit their dad for their love of music. One of their fondest memories is of him blasting Lionel Ritchie in the car with all of the windows rolled down. Coolest dad ever. He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years Marjorie Kamins Becker, his children Jason Becker (Leah) and Sarah Becker (Doug), and granddaughter Isla, as well as many close friends.

Trying out going with the flow. A broken vessel makes room for its mate.

One of my favorites created this prayer as a poster and I just love it all. I say this over and over and it helps me feel better.

Fake it til you make it...or don’t and cry your eyes out until snot runs down your face and all you can do is lie there gazing out the window at the trees and the hummingbird who you say “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry” to over and over.
*This smiley face miraculously appeared in the big mound of ginger pulp that we used to make lung tonic. You know, like how Jesus appears in trees and clouds?

“You gotta love the crust of a motherf*cker...You gotta love the crumbs, the tiny crumbs at the bottom of the toaster. That’s what the real motherf*cker is.

Last Friday, on a tiny golden crescent beach on the Yuba River, just 2 days short of 5 years together, Doug asked me to marry him.
Of course, I said yes.
The sun was sparkling on the moving water and Stevie Wonder was playing in the background. I had just flung my bikini top to the ground.
As a 46 year old, who’s never exceeded 4 years in any single one of my romantic relationships since 14 years old, this is the first time I’ve ever said yes to love & commitment on this level.
It’s sort of scary.
Ok, it’s really scary.
But it feels totally right.
One of the gems that Doug has brought forth in our time together is that I gotta love the crust of myself.
He’s taught me how to love him and all his crusty bits, too. *Ok, that sounds gross*
I’ve learned that when you commit to practicing this big and deep and real love (& trust) comes forward.
Chris Rock may be divorced now but this is one damn good tidbit of wisdom for simply loving.
