A Maui Fire Relief Update from Nicole 09/21/2023

~ MAHALO ~

Hi Everyone,
It has been a month and a half since the Maui fires, and I'm writing now with heartfelt thanks to you for your help, and some updates.

Thanks to your NBS online store purchases from our Hawaiian skincare makers, together we sent a good sized donation to the California Fire Foundation's Hawaii Wildfire Disaster Relief Fund (https://cpf.salsalabs.org/MauiWildfireRelief2023/index.html) , created in the aftermath of the Maui fires to direct 100% of proceeds to Hawaii Fire Fighters Association, IAFF Local 1463, who will directly administer aid to survivors of the fire and firefighters who have been injured and lost their homes in the Maui wildfires.
After seeing the calm, courageous firefighters in the midst of that terrorizing blaze, helping others as their own homes were burning, I wanted to send our first donation directly to those at the epicenter of the fire--those who were both the victims and the heroes all at the same time.

It has taken our Maui makers a little time to get everything to us, and I'm happy to share that packages went out today! Be on the lookout! Emma made us our own fresh batch of Tuberose Cream, and Oshan Essentials gave us double sized bottles of the last of her handwash. Gotta love these generous ladies! Each one of them has thanked me for our support, as even those who did not lose their homes are still deeply affected and involved in myriad ways. So I pass along a big heartfelt Mahalo to you from all of them - Zephyr Rising Apothecary, Oshan Essentials, and Honua. (https://www.nicoleburke.com/shop/zephyr-rising-apothecary-maui-made/31?page=1&limit=60&sort_by=category_order&sort_order=asc)

One of the most beautiful things about life on Maui is the way community shows up for each other, and I'm grateful that we can share in that together. I was so touched that my email about the fire fundraiser was by far the most viewed email I've ever sent to this list. You all make my heart full! As we were doing what we could here, absolutely amazing things were happening on Maui. From gathering breast milk for infants, to pro surfers taking Lahaina youth out for a surf... from private boats and helicopters ushering supplies to areas without water or power... to Oprah and Dwayne Johnson creating the People's Fund of Maui (https://www.eifoundation.org/peoples-fund-of-maui/) in collaboration with some of Maui's foremost Native Hawaiian leaders.

Here are a few updates on the aftermath of the fires that I'd like to share, since information has been slow to evolve and not all available in one place, along with more ideas of how to continue to help.

There were three fires burning that week of August 8th, and while Lahaina has captured most of the attention, the upcountry fire also devastated many properties and people there are still without clean, safe drinking water. Community water stations are set up for the residents there until safe water is available.
There are currently 31 people on the Maui Police Lahaina missing persons list (http://www.mauipolice.com/uploads/1/3/1/2/131209824/09-15-2023_fbi_list_for_maui_pd_-_unaccounted.pdf) .
The current fatalities count is 97 people.
The Honolulu Star Advisor is publishing a tribute to the victims (https://www.staradvertiser.com/2023/09/15/breaking-news/in-memoriam-a-list-of-victims-killed-in-maui-fires/) as they are identified, with photos and a biography of each of them--many of them were in their later decades and lifelong Lahaina residents. There is a row of crosses along the Lahaina Bypass in commemoration of each person lost, draped with ti leaf lei of protection that were collected and handmade in a community gathering.
The path back "home" for those who lost theirs is different for everyone and some have moved off the island. Others are receiving assistance with housing. There are multiple viewpoints on how to rebuild Lahaina, as it was once a natural wetland (https://savethewetlands.org/mokuhinia-wetland/) , so we will see how the planning evolves. Scientific groups are working to monitor, and mitigate, damage to water and reefs from toxic run off. And, the banyan tree has a few green leaves sprouting.

Here is an up-to-date list of vetted organizations for donations:
https://www.mauinuistrong.info/resource-categories/donate-money
It includes one of my favorites, Pacific Birth Collective (https://pacificbirthcollective.org/) .

Supporting Maui's small businesses is also wonderful way to connect, and most of them are giving back to the community in their own ways. Here are some of my favorites, beyond the skincare we already know and love:
Beauty By Nature Maui (https://www.beautybynaturemaui.com/) - pop up wellness services for fire victims. Go for spa services when you're there, it's so local & lovely!
Akamai Coffee (https://www.akamaicoffee.com/) - pay it forward coffee for the Westside
Wings Hawaii (https://www.wingshawaii.com/) - crafty ladies, beautiful goods, Maui Strong sticker fundraiser
Aloha Kayaks Maui (https://www.alohakayaksmaui.com/) - take a tour with Griff, he is an amazing guide and has been doing a lot to coordinate needed supplies.
Of course there are so many more, and you may already have your own favorites!

Visiting Maui is being encouraged by many, with the request to visit areas other than the Westside of the island. It's also requested to be particularly respectful of both Lahaina itself (do not enter) and of all of the island's residents who are both grappling with all that has happened and trying to move forward.

Here at Nicole Burke Skincare, we will continue to make donations until it feels like everyone affected has found their way to stability.

And I can't help but mention that there is, unfortunately, a lot else to do in our world. The floods in Libya have been devastating... the earthquake in rural Morocco... this week we in SF are inundated by smoke from fires in Oregon... Together let's keep taking the steps we can and keep our hearts and energy cared for and strong for the long haul. Our community is global and our reaching out touches many reaching back to work together.

With true gratitude,
Nicole

Today was a super fun return to the annual Face & Body Skin Care Show. The highlight was definitely seeing Kapua at ‘s beautiful booth! They were far and away the most authentically sustainable company in the room (maybe in the history of the show). It’s a major win for sustainable beauty to have them there. I told everyone I talked to to go get some Hawaiian Water and Mahealani Balm!
I also checked out the latest from , observed some powerful facial massage techniques, and picked up a few surprises for the treatment room…!

We ARE Stronger Together.

I woke up early this morning to the smell of fire, alerted into wondering ‘Where is my passport?’ and cursing that my cat carrier is on loan… Maybe it was a premonition? There was no fire here in SF, thankfully. But as soon as I looked at my phone I saw that my friends on Maui were under siege by three blazing fires, most of them spent a sleepless night evacuating their homes, and historic Lahaina town was burning down.

Today is a hard day. And it’s not over. One friend is spraying down her roof as I type. Another is sheltering her landlords who are in their 90s. Impromptu shelters are full all over the island, the community is rallying to collect donations for those who’ve lost nearly everything.
Getting myself to write this while crying is hard. But I love Maui and all my friends and family there, and I am so grateful for what the ‘aina, the land, has given me throughout my life, and I owe her this.

If you need to catch up on what has been happening: mauinow.com (https://mauinow.com/)

To raise funds for donations to those in need,
NICOLE BURKE SKINCARE IS DONATING 100% OF PROFITS ON ALL OUR HAWAIIAN SKINCARE TO MAUI FIRE RELIEF.
This applies to all sales in our online shop between now and Sunday at midnight. The deadline is in hope you will take action now if you want to take it at all.

Here are the beautiful brands that are part of our fundraiser ~ search Categories in the product shop to see their offerings...
OSHAN ESSENTIALS ~ Maui-made in upcountry
HONUA HAWAIIAN SKINCARE ~ native Hawaiian founder from Oahu
ZEPHYR RISING APOTHECARY ~ based in Kihei, featuring her coveted Tuberose Cream and special addition, *vegan coconut bacon* that goes in your face, not on it ;)

All of the makers are ready to fulfill our orders for anything not already in stock at the studio and glad to be working together on this. All of the proceeds will be donated to help those in need to survive and rebuild. I am researching where exactly I will be donating, likely from the list below, and will let everyone know next week where our contribution is headed to help.

If you want to help further, via monetary donations, be cautious and make sure it is to a legitimate organization.
Here are some of the best vetted ones I’ve found so far:
hawaiiancouncil.org (https://www.hawaiiancouncil.org/) - they will double your donation
kaainamomona.org (https://www.kaainamomona.org/)
hawaiicommunityfoundation.org (https://www.hawaiicommunityfoundation.org/)

I’ve heard some questions about whether to visit Maui in the near future, and what I have heard requested from those living through this is that the people of Maui, the thousands displaced by the hundreds of homes and businesses destroyed, need access to the island’s resources now.

Personally, I ask you to perhaps consider a trip in the future where you participate as a volunteer rebuilding homes, or some other constructive way to participate in the healing process beyond just dumping money into airlines, rental cars and resorts. Find ways to directly interact with the community and make sure the money you spend is going into the community and not to the multinational tourism industry. Rethink “vacation” and “travel” and set some goals to learn from the Hawaiian culture of today, contribute to the place that feeds all of our souls, and create a deeper relationship with it. There are so many wonderful organizations on Maui that teach about the flora and fauna, restore habitat, protect wildlife and care for the community. Get to know one that interests you.

We are all bonded by the magical beauty of Maui and Hawai’i. It is the land itself that connects us, enriches us, soothes and heals us. Our shared love of the ‘aina is the reason to connect with each other to heal and protect her back–it is only in connecting with each other that we can do most right by her. Because let’s face the hard realities, it is our collective choices that have brought us to this world of climate change. I feel so helpless and angry about that. So guilty and truly frightened for our future. Maybe you do too.
I’m starting with the small steps I can see in front of me now, and I hope you will join me.

Mahalo and Aloha,
Nicole
