Happy Pilates Day! It’s a day we stop and reflect on the man, Joseph Pilates and the work he brought to us. I wonder what he’d think of the Pilates craze right now almost sixty years after his death.
Come discover real classical Pilates at Phoenix. All ages and levels welcome. We’ll make you stronger!

I’m happy to announce we have a new teacher at Phoenix… Meet Marea Bianchini!

Marea and I used to teach together at Winsor Pilates! Her sessions are focused on strength, control, and intelligent movement. With over 25 years of experience in classical Pilates, she brings a deep understanding of the body and a thoughtful, individualized approach to each client. Marea studied with Romana Kryzanowska, Joseph Pilates’ primary protégé, and has also taught alongside Mari Winsor in Los Angeles.

A former ballet dancer, she combines precision, athleticism, and careful attention to alignment to help clients move with greater strength, stability, and confidence. Her work supports a wide range of bodies—from athletes and active adults to those seeking long-term strength and resilience.

Marea is available Monday through Thursday afternoon/evenings. Book at phoenixclassicalpilates.com/appointments/

✨ Your energy isn’t random. ✨

If some workouts feel amazing and others feel impossible… that’s not laziness. It’s your internal clock.

Your circadian rhythm affects your sleep, energy, and performance. Some people thrive in morning classes. Others feel strongest later in the day.

The goal isn’t “earlier is better.” It’s finding your rhythm.

👇 Are you more of a morning or evening mover?
Lucky for you, we offer classes, privates and semi-privates at Phoenix in the mornings, afternoons and evenings to work with your schedule and circadian rhythms.

Long fingers look pretty, like ballet. But strong hands help you live longer.
A recent article in the New York Times highlighted simple tests for aging well — and the one that stood out to me was grip strength. Research shows stronger grip is linked to better mobility, fewer falls, and even longer life.
If you practice Pilates for longevity, this matters.
Yet in Pilates we’re told:
“Keep your fingers long.”
“Don’t grip the handles.”
It looks elegant but doesn’t make sense.

Your grip muscles are some of your most primal muscles. Babies are born with the palmar grasp reflex — a primitive survival pattern shared with other primates. Grasping is fundamental to human function… yet grip strength is also one of the first things to decline as we age.

Try opening a stuck jar with long fingers.
Try carrying groceries with long fingers.
Try picking up or a heavy suitcase or a baby with long fingers.
Real life requires grip.
In exercises like The Hundred, Coordination, Pulling Straps, and Arm Springs, the handles are meant to be grasped, not draped across long fingers.
Using your hands correctly doesn’t create tension.
It creates connection:
Strong hands support strong arms.
Strong arms support strong shoulders.
And strong grip supports a long life.
