A little Yaupon history to start your week. Yaupon grows along the coast in the southeastern United States. Cacao originates in South and Central America. So how did pottery with traces of Yaupon and Cacao end up in Illinois!? It is amazing to think about how far trade happened so long ago.

On this Thirstea Thursday, we are looking at the Ilex family and the “Holly Trinity”. If you are familiar with Yerba Mate or Guayusa, you may not know that they are cousin plants to Yaupon. While they grow in South America, Yaupon grows in North America. All are caffeinated and have history with indigenous tribes – used in ceremonies, as medicine, and as a stimulating beverage. Have you tried drinking all three?

It’s getting hot 🥵 out there. What better way to cool off than with a glass of Yaupon cold brewed! Here is how you can make it at home. Step 1: Gather your Yaupon, water, measuring spoon, and container.
Step 2: Add 1 Tbs of Yaupon per 16 oz of water (can add in a tea bag or directly in the container).
Step 3: Add water.
Step 4: Put in refrigerator overnight (18-24 hours).
Step 5: Take from the refrigerator to serve (strain the tea if you did not use a tea bag).
Step 6: Sit outside with a book and enjoy!
