Looking back, here are five things I wish I would have known before we downsized:

1. You are not just downsizing your house — you are resizing your life.
This is not only about square footage. It is about how you want to live, what you want your days to feel like, and what you are finally ready to stop taking care of.

2. The stuff is harder than the move.
The furniture, the boxes, the basement shelves, the holiday bins — they all carry memories. Give yourself time. This part is emotional, and that is normal.

3. You do not need to keep a house for “someday.”
The extra bedrooms, formal dining room, and huge yard may have served your family beautifully. But your home should support the life you are living now, not the life you lived 20 years ago.

4. Smaller does not mean less.
Less space can mean more freedom, more travel, more peace, more time, and more money available for the things you actually enjoy.

5. The right move is not always obvious at first.
Sometimes it takes a little planning to see what your current home equity can make possible — a condo, a ranch, a winter home somewhere warm, or a simpler Michigan summer lifestyle.

Downsizing is not giving something up.

It can be the start of living with more intention.

And honestly? I wish someone had walked us through the emotional side, the financial side, and the “what comes next” side before we made the move.

That is exactly why I help my clients through it now.

Thinking about downsizing, but not sure where to start? Send me a message with the word “DOWNSIZE” and I’ll help you look at your options before you make any big decisions. 05/16/2026

Retirement regret is real. Avoid it👇

Everybody sells retirement like it’s one long vacation.

But for a lot of us, retirement hits and suddenly it’s less “freedom!” and more “wait… who am I now?”

On this week’s Q***r Money, we broke down why so many people end up hating retirement, including:

▸ They retired from something, not to something.
▸ They lost their identity overnight.
▸ They don’t feel needed anymore.
▸ They have freedom but no structure.
▸ Their friendships quietly fade.
▸ Their money anxiety didn’t disappear.
▸ They waited too long to actually enjoy it.

And the numbers back this up: 77% of pre-retirees expect to be happier in retirement, but only about 67% of retirees actually are.

The happiest retirees aren’t just “not working.” They’re spending more time with loved ones, exercising more, pursuing hobbies and traveling.

In other words, they didn’t just quit a job. They built a life.

Because a happy gay retirement is life by design.

And if you don’t plan your purpose, your people, your rhythm and your next identity, retirement can feel shockingly empty.

But a retirement you want to wake up to every day? That takes intention.
