Today’s my birthday.

The other day on my story I shared a meme that my son sent me and it read “You are extremely lucky if you have a great relationship with your mom.”
Oh, how lucky I truly am to have a relationship with both my child and my mom. As a parent, I’m thankful to my mom for instilling resilience, strength and courage in me. The courage it must’ve took for her to just pick up and move from NJ to Georgia after the traumatic loss of my sister with no job.
She taught me early on to embody confidence through guided meditation, exposing me to the arts and encouraging me to express myself creatively. Piano and flute lessons replaced friends. (I didn’t have many) My friends were Chopin, Bach and Beethoven.
We lived in the hood, where our neighbors found the music and my mom’s behavior to be strange. She was also quite the green thumb and grew all types of plants, and natural herbs as she something like a homeopathic wizard.
She was amazing! She did her best to keep me balanced despite our environment. The neighbors would trash her plants and would taunt me. I literally fought EVERY DAY.
Yet, this was the balance that grounded me. I learned to appreciate music, I learned the power of the subconscious mind and I also learned the very necessary art of HEAD BUSSING!
I'm thankful for it all. If it were not for this balance, I wouldn't be the diverse woman I am today. These are a few of the qualities that I want to pass to my child. I want to be sure to leave him with room to become his own version of himself.
Although I wasn’t equipped with perfect parenting skills, I did understand the value in giving my child the resources and support to be whatever he aspires to be as my mom had instilled in me.
I’m thankful to have at least half of her wisdom. As young wife and new mother, I found myself starting over w/ a baby. I had moved to a new state, failing at marriage and it felt like motherhood was a bust, too. But I was reminded by my mother’s own resilience that I am enough. I had the strength of my mom and grandma and moms before me. I’m stronger than my failures, stronger than a wife and stronger than a mother or any other expectations of me @ Motherhood
