Just do it Nike

I’m so thankful I traveled to North Carolina when I did. I’m thankful I got to spend time with my grandfather during his last days, bring him some of his favorite things to eat, and be by his side when he needed it. I didn’t know that would be the last time I’d see him. ❤️

He was one of the people who gave me the courage to keep building my life in Atlanta. When things got hard and I wanted to move back home, he encouraged me to stay and keep going. Whatever I said I wanted to do, he supported it. Learning to move forward without that encouragement from him has been one of the hardest parts of this chapter.

On that trip, I intended to help make sure his final expenses were in order, that he was receiving proper care, and that his appointments were arranged. I was told everything was handled, but when the time came, we discovered things weren’t in place the way we thought.

That added another layer to the grief. While you’re trying to process losing someone you love, you’re also helping sort through responsibilities and questions you believed had already been taken care of.

Through it all, I’ve continued handling responsibilities here in Georgia for him while redefining my life outside of the beauty industry. I’m thankful my business has continued to flourish and that I’ve been able to show up and support my Trio ❤️ This season has made me think more deeply about why I’m building and what I want my work to mean.

Caring for our families includes preparing for the moments we hope won’t come. While we’re planning for the FUTURE, we also have to make room for the uncomfortable conversations about the unexpected and follow through so our families know what’s in place and where to find it.

The reason you’re still a broke hairstylist might not be because you need MORE clients.

You might be thinking too small.

Most beauty professionals are afraid to niche down because they think:

“If I only focus on one thing, I’m going to miss out on money.”

I learned the opposite.

When you become the solution to a specific problem, you give people a reason to choose YOU instead of the hundreds of other beauty professionals offering the same services.

That’s when I stopped trying to do everything and started becoming known for something.

And eventually, that shift helped me do more than make money behind the chair.

It helped me learn how to scale beyond my appointments, diversify my income, and eventually retire from behind the chair.

There are 3 things I learned that changed the way I looked at my beauty business.

And #3 is the one I see MOST beauty professionals missing.

Chase your dream no matter where you come from or what you’ve been through.

I came out of foster care and was raising a son at 19. I got evicted at 21. I’ve been homeless with my kids before living at a hotel no motel, survived three car accidents in one year, and lost people I love, both alive and deceased

I’m not saying that for sympathy. Sometimes I just sit still and thank God for how far I’ve come.

I never want to get so caught up in becoming that I forget I’m actually living a life I once prayed for.

That’s my message today: chase your dream. Your past doesn’t get to decide where or how far you go. YOU DO
