About four months after opening my very first salon, that’s exactly what happened.
The power went out. Water kept coming in. I had to make a decision.
I could keep trying to work through it, or I could put everyone’s safety first and close for the day.
One of my clients had only been with me for about an hour and was disappointed she couldn’t finish her appointment. I completely understood her frustration, so I invited her back the next day and finished her lashes at no charge.
Was the flood my fault? No.
But one thing I’ve learned as a business owner is that leadership isn’t always about who’s at fault. Sometimes it’s about how you respond.
People see beautiful salons, booked calendars, and successful businesses. What they don’t see are the floods, the last-minute problems, the difficult decisions, and the moments that test you when no one is watching.
Those moments don’t break entrepreneurs. They build them.
This month makes 5 years since I bet on myself. I walked away from a government career, a guaranteed paycheck, benefits, and everything people call “security.” I wasn’t chasing a job. I was chasing ownership. I wanted to build something bigger than me. Something that would create opportunities for other women to grow, earn, and change their lives too. That one decision changed the trajectory of my life forever.
