In extremely hot conditions, some flowers in Australia produce nectar with a higher alcohol content, which can intoxicate bees. This happens because the heat causes fermentation, turning sugars in the nectar into alcohol. Bees that consume this fermented nectar can become “drunk” and exhibit behaviors such as stumbling or difficulty flying. While this phenomenon is not limited to Australia, it is particularly notable in certain areas with extreme heat, where fermentation in flowers can occur more easily. To prevent “drunk” bees from entering the hive and potentially disrupting the colony, other bees, known as “bouncers,” will refuse them entry until they have sobered up. These bees are responsible for guarding the hive and maintaining order. This behavior is essential for the health of the colony, as intoxicated bees could jeopardize hive safety or efficiency.
