COVID-19 sucks. It has devastated families, ruined plans, and strained the hopes and dreams of so many people. Being an ER nurse on the front lines of this pandemic in the hardest-hit county in Maryland has taken a toll on me mentally, physically, and emotionally. So I took a step back from EVERYTHING. It was imperative that I took the time to maintain my health. I can't take care of anyone else if I can't take care of myself.โฃโฃ

I don't play when it comes to health and wellness. In my ER, it's ๐ ๐ฉ๐๐ญ๐ข๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ ๐ง๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ๐. If you have an IMCU patient (not sick enough for ICU, but too sick for the regular floor), your ratio should be 3 to 1. If you have an ICU patient, your ratio should be 2 to 1 or 1 to 1, depending on how sick they are. One night, I had four patients: 1 sepsis, 1 hyperglycemia, 1 fall with minor head trauma + slight amnesia, and 1 urosepsis with altered mental status. As soon as my sepsis patient got orders to go the the telemetry floor, their blood pressure ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐, and didn't respond to the 3 fluid boluses I gave them ๐คฆ๐พ. So now my telemetry patient is an IMCU patient. Guess who has to remain 4 to 1 when she should at least be 3 to 1 b/c there wasn't enough staff to take one of her patients: ๐๐พ.โฃโฃ

, I wish you were there that night to titrate the vassopressors and check their BP literally every 5 minutes ๐๐๐ keep the urosepsis patient from pulling out their IV and cardiac monitor cords ๐๐๐ give more insulin & fluids to the hyperglycemia patient whose blood sugar was still way too high so I could get back to my Spades game.. ๐โฃโฃ
