🚲 Before there were cars, there were cyclists. And we're the reason America got paved roads at all.
It's one of the great untold stories in cycling, and once you know it, you'll never look at a smooth stretch of tarmac the same way again.
Rewind to the 1880s and 1890s. Most roads in America were dirt. Hub-deep mud after rain. Choking dust when it was dry. Ruts that could swallow a wheel whole. Nobody in government much cared - roads were a local problem, fixed by farmers with shovels when they got around to it.
Then the bicycle boom hit.
The safety bicycle arrived, and suddenly millions of Americans were riding. At the peak around 1896, the country was producing over a million bikes a year. And riders quickly discovered something: a bicycle is brutally honest about a bad road. Narrow tires, no suspension, every rut and stone felt in your bones.
So cyclists did something radical. They organized.
The League of American Wheelmen, founded in 1880, grew to roughly 100,000 members and became one of the most powerful lobbying forces in the country. These weren't just riders. They were citizens with a mission - to drag America's roads into the modern age.
Here's what they actually did:
- Launched the Good Roads Movement and even gave it that name
- Founded "Good Roads" magazine in 1892 to spread the gospel of better roads
- Lobbied Congress until it created the federal Office of Road Inquiry in 1893 - the great-grandfather of today's highway agencies
- Backed the famous "Good Roads Trains," which rolled into towns with machinery and built showcase stretches of proper road so locals could see what they'd been missing
And remember - they did all of this before the automobile was anything more than a rare, sputtering novelty. When the Wheelmen were at the height of their power, almost nobody in America owned a car.
Cyclists got there first.
They were the ones who argued that good roads weren't a luxury for sport riders, but a public good that would help everyone - farmers getting crops to market, mail reaching the countryside, towns connecting to one another. They changed how a whole nation thought about its roads.
Of course, they had help. Farmers, the Post Office, and the railroads all pushed too. And we won't pretend the cyclists single-handedly poured every mile of asphalt. But it was riders who lit the spark, built the first institutions, and turned "bad roads" from a shrug into a national cause.
The next time you roll out onto smooth pavement, give a quiet nod to those Wheelmen in their wool jerseys and waxed mustaches. They couldn't have imagined a Strava segment or a carbon frame. But they fought for the ground beneath your tires.
We were the original road warriors. Long before the cars showed up.
