Two hundred years ago, in 1825, Mississippi was in the midst of a massive transformation driven by the cotton boom and forced migration. The state was heavily dependent on slavery and was in the process of forcibly removing the native Choctaw and Chickasaw nations to acquire more land.
Statehood and government
A new state, a new capital: Mississippi had only been a state for about eight years, having joined the Union on December 10, 1817. In 1825, the capital city of Jackson was still very new; it was designated and named in honor of Andrew Jackson in 1821.
Governmental control: State government was dominated by wealthy white planters who controlled most of the state's riches and politics.
Harsh racial laws: State laws presumed any person of color to be a slave, and free Black individuals were required to carry "freedom papers" at all times to prove their status.
Land and Native Americans
The pursuit of land: The federal government and white settlers had long sought to acquire Native American lands in the Southeast. The fertile land was ideal for growing cotton, fueling a "Mississippi Fever" for westward expansion.
Native nations: In the early 1820s, a significant portion of Mississippi was still inhabited by the Choctaw and Chickasaw peoples. The Choctaw nation was the largest, controlling most of the central and southern parts of the state.
Forced removal: Although some treaties had been negotiated, a renewed and aggressive push for land was unleashed with Andrew Jackson's presidency in 1828. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek ultimately forced the Choctaw and Chickasaw to be deported west of the Mississippi River in what became known as the Trail of Tears.
Economy and slavery
Cotton kingdom: By the 1820s, Mississippi was rapidly becoming a major producer of cotton, a cash crop that defined its economy. The invention of the cotton gin and new cotton strains like "Petit Gulf" allowed for far greater yields, making cotton production extremely profitable.
The domestic slave trade: The booming cotton industry fueled a massive interstate slave trade. Between 1820 and 1860, approximately 235,000 enslaved people were forcibly moved to Mississippi from older states to work on plantations. The population of enslaved people grew from 33,272 in 1820 to 75,000 by 1860.
Brutal labor conditions: The increased demand for cotton resulted in enslaved people working longer and harder hours. Their forced labor was the foundation of the state's immense wealth.
