See also: a 1099 should not be the classification for a long term position performing the core services of the business.

1099 can make sense when a chiropractor or physical therapist brings on a LMT - but the distinction that the LMT is an individual provider often gets blurred.

The 1099 issue is one of the most misunderstood topics in the massage industry.

A 1099 is not simply a different way to pay a massage therapist. A legitimate independent contractor is running their own business. That means they typically set their own rates, market themselves, collect payment from clients, pay their own business expenses, and often rent treatment space.

If the business controls the schedule, sets the prices, books the clients, provides the equipment, and directs how the work is done, that may not be a true independent contractor relationship. Simply issuing a 1099 doesn’t automatically make someone self-employed.

Many therapists focus on the higher percentage split but overlook taxes. As a W-2 employee, you pay 7.65% in payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare), while your employer pays the other 7.65%. As a 1099 independent contractor, you’re responsible for the entire 15.3% self-employment tax, in addition to your regular federal and state income taxes.

On top of that, independent contractors pay their own liability insurance, retirement contributions, health insurance, supplies, continuing education, and other business expenses. A higher percentage split doesn’t automatically mean more money in your pocket.

Every arrangement should comply with state and federal laws, but therapists should understand the financial and legal differences before agreeing to any compensation model. Education is far more valuable than believing the myth that “1099 always pays better.”

You’re gonna LOVE medicupping 😍 This therapy uses vacuum-powered cupping that can be programmed to precise pressures. While cups are stationary, the suction can also “pump” up and down. This not only adds a pleasant sensation, but helps your body recycle lymphatic fluid.

Brooke has been practicing this therapy on our team and she will be offering medicupping sessions in August ☺️

Improving thoracic mobility - why is this helpful?

Your thoracic spine, which starts at the bridge between your neck and back, and ends at the bottom of your ribcage, is designed to be the most mobile part of the spine. When it gets stiff, everything from your breathing to your posture and neck pain can be impacted.

Notice how detailed we get with our intake process - I guarantee more than half of your massage appointments at other places haven’t asked more than 5 total questions. Two of those were probably “would you like water? All set?”

Asking specific questions helps us put together the puzzle, and also helps eliminate ambiguity about where the pain is. Because “back” can reference 40+ muscles, and searing pain means something different than dull achey pain.

Brooke is practicing her new medicupping therapy on our team - more details to come! She’ll be launching this service in August.
