My name is Anna, I’m 36 years old, and live in Syracuse, NY. I am a mom to a 13‑year‑old boy and an 11‑year‑old girl. I was diagnosed with Lichen Sclerous two years ago after having a spot that was so itchy. I just knew something was wrong. I had two in‑office biopsies on that spot, which tested negative.

I was directed to continue using the steroid cream, but the spot kept getting worse, which is why I insisted on surgical removal. It was then discovered it was vulvar cancer. Three months later, another spot arose and was removed. Again, vulvar cancer. This time my lymph nodes were checked, and there was small, confirmed spread to the lymph nodes, which put me at Stage 3.

In under a year, I have had six vulvar surgeries, and I just completed six weeks of radiation, six weekly chemotherapy treatments, and I have to continue with immunotherapy shots every three weeks for two years. I knew something wasn’t right, even after multiple negative biopsies. I kept advocating for myself until I was diagnosed with Stage 3 vulvar cancer. My case is also non‑HPV, furthering confusion as to “why is this happening.”

My advice to others: Trust your body, speak up, and don’t be afraid to seek another opinion. Your persistence could save your life — mine did.
