Sunday Self Care Tip: Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

It’s important to practice good hygiene with your makeup brushes and here’s why--each time you use your brushes, they collect EVERYTHING on your skin. Dirt, oil, dead skin cells, and sweat are just a few things your brushes can store. 🤢

Dirty brushes are the PERFECT environment for breeding bacteria. It’s terrible for your face, it can cause your products to become contaminated, and it can cause your products to not apply well to your face. 🙅🏻‍♀️

It’s recommended to use the Mary Kay® Brush Cleaner between shade applications, to prevent unwanted color mixing, as well as for day to day cleanings. 💁🏻‍♀️

How to use the Mary Kay® Brush Cleaner between color applications:

1) Spray the Mary Kay® Brush Cleaner directly onto the brush bristles until they’re thoroughly saturated
2) Sweep the brush over a paper towel to remove the excess moisture and the color
3) Reshape the bristles and lay flat to allow the brush to air dry

It’s recommended to deep clean all brushes weekly! For brushes that are used with liquids or creams, it may be necessary to clean more frequently, especially with liquid foundations.

How to Deep Clean Brushes:

1) Wet the bristles with warm water (avoid completely submerging the brush into the cup)
2) Sq**rt a mild cleanser into your palm and sweep the bristles back and forth and in a circular motion (the Mary Kay® 2-In-1 Body Wash & Shave works great but any mild cleanser will work--linked below!)
3) Rinse well in a separate cup of warm water
4) Squeeze out excess water on a clean paper towel
5) Reshape the bristles and lay flat to air dry

*Pro Tip: Never dry brushes upright! ALWAYS lay flat to dry after reshaping. Water can seep into the handle and weaken the integrity of the brush. The handle can store water that will bleed into your products during your next application.

If you follow these steps, your brushes will perform better and will last longer! And who wouldn’t love that!

It's that time of year when the air becomes crisp, the leaves crunch underfoot, and everything is beautiful. The change in temperature can have a less beautiful effect on skin though.

After a surprise trip to Colorado this weekend, my hands are dry. Crunchy dry. The kind of dry that makes me wince when I wash my hands.
