In honor of Black History Month, NYSID is recognizing historical and contemporary figures who made a lasting impact through their contributions to the world of design.
Thomas Day (1801–1861) was an American furniture craftsman and cabinetmaker who owned and operated one of North Carolina’s most successful cabinet shops before the Civil War. His surviving furniture and architectural woodwork represent the finest nineteenth-century craftsmanship and aesthetics. Today, Day’s pieces are highly sought after, studied extensively, and displayed in museums.
