For those who haven't heard - the incredibly talented Carmen Pieterse has been building her place in the aesthetics industry since 2021, beginning in Cape Town before returning here to Bloemfontein, her hometown, to continue the business under the name Carmen Beauty PMU. Permanent makeup sits at the centre of her brand, but Pieterse’s broader focus is lash extensions, skincare, beauty treatments and client care shaped around the individual rather than a standard package.

She says that her interest in the field grew out of a longstanding pull toward beauty, skincare and the confidence that often follows when people feel more comfortable in their own appearance. “There is something incredibly rewarding about helping people feel beautiful, confident, and comfortable in their own skin,” she says. Her business now offers permanent makeup for brows, lips and eyeliner, alongside lash extensions, lash lifts and tinting, brow lamination, dermaplaning, microneedling and waxing.

For clients unfamiliar with some of those treatments, dermaplaning has become one of the more recognisable examples of the kind of service she provides: a non-invasive exfoliation treatment using a specialised blade to remove dead skin cells and fine facial hair, leaving the skin smoother and helping products absorb more effectively. Pieterse says many Bloemfontein clients were looking for something more specific than a one-size-fits-all approach, and that gap helped shape the business.

Her aim, she says, was to create a space where clients feel heard, understood and properly guided.

This client-centred approach is also what she says separates Carmen Beauty PMU from a crowded market. Pieterse places emphasis on consultation, detail and ongoing training, arguing that aesthetic work should enhance natural features rather than push people toward something artificial or generic.

“My focus is always on enhancing natural beauty rather than changing it,” she says. Education, hygiene and safety are also at the very centre of her work, and this continued professional training is essential in a field that changes so quickly and where treatment standards really, really matter.

She explains that what keeps the work meaningful for her is the visible change in how clients feel after treatment, whether that means improved skin, satisfaction with a result or simply greater ease without makeup. Looking ahead, Pieterse says she wants to continue growing Carmen Beauty PMU into a trusted local destination by expanding her treatment offering and continuing to invest in advanced training. Her broader message remains straightforward: “Beauty is not about changing who you are - it’s about enhancing what makes you uniquely beautiful and feeling confident in your own skin.”
