Build the business you've been dreaming about.
Hello everyone, and welcome to another practical perfumery lesson from Mab Fragrance Company.
Today I'd like to share one of the biggest mistakes I see beginner perfumers make.
After creating a new fragrance formula, many people smell it immediately and decide they don't like it. They quickly change the formula or throw it away.
From my own experience, I've learned that patience is an essential part of perfume formulation.
A fragrance is made from many different aroma materials, and once they're blended together, the composition often continues to develop over time. After a few days, or sometimes even longer, the fragrance may become smoother, more balanced, and much closer to the result you were hoping for.
Another mistake is evaluating the fragrance oil directly from the bottle. At full strength, some ingredients can overpower the others, making it difficult to appreciate the complete composition.
Instead, prepare a 10% dilution using ethanol or another suitable perfumery solvent. This allows you to evaluate the fragrance more accurately, including its opening, heart, and dry-down.
My advice is simple: don't rush to judge your formula. Give it time, evaluate it correctly, take notes, and then decide whether it needs improvement.
Remember, successful perfume creation isn't only about choosing the right ingredients—it's also about patience, observation, and continuous learning.
