Cape Town Interventional Radiology

TIPS (Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt) is a specialised, minimally invasive procedure used to help patients with advanced liver disease and complications of portal hypertension.

The procedure creates a new pathway for blood to flow through the liver, reducing pressure in the portal vein and helping to prevent serious complications such as fluid build-up in the abdomen and bleeding from enlarged veins.

Performed under image guidance by an Interventional Radiologist, TIPS can provide significant symptom relief and improve quality of life for carefully selected patients.

Under the mentorship of Dr Dale Creamer, Dr Jateel Kassim is South Africa's first Interventional Radiology Fellow.

"So much respect": Cape Town team pioneers second cryoablation for cancer Dr Gercois Human and the Cape Town team perform South Africa's second cryoablation for recurrent papillary thyroid cancer, receiving nationwide acclaim.

Dr Gercois has done it again!

Today, Dr Gercois Human, alongside Dr Jateel Kassim and Dr Gary Peiser from the Cape Town Interventional Radiology team, successfully performed South Africa's second Cryoablation treatment for recurrent papillary thyroid cancer at UCT Private Academic Hospital in Cape Town.

This follows another historic milestone in March 2026, when Dr Gercois and the team performed South Africa's first Cryoablation procedure for recurrent papillary thyroid cancer, helping to introduce this advanced treatment option to patients in our country.

Cryoablation is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure that uses extremely cold temperatures to precisely freeze and destroy cancer cells while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. In this case, the patient had a recurrence of papillary thyroid carcinoma, with new cancerous lesions developing after their original thyroid cancer had been surgically removed.

Congratulations to Dr Gercois, Dr Jateel Kassim, Dr Gary Peiser and the entire Cape Town Interventional Radiology team for continuing to pioneer innovative, world-class treatments and expanding access to cutting-edge cancer care in South Africa.

We are proud to welcome Dr Gary Peiser on his first day as our new Interventional Radiology Fellow! Dr Gary is the second fellow accepted into the Professor Steve Beningfield Fellowship.

He will be working at Groote Schuur Hospital and UCT Private Academic Hospital, under the leadership of Dr Dale Creamer and the Cape Town Interventional Radiology team!

Dr Dale’s passion for Interventional Radiology began in 2012 while working as an intern at RK Khan Hospital in Durban. After accompanying a patient to the X-ray department, he was invited to observe a Barium Swallow study. Watching real-time imaging, seeing a beating heart, and following contrast move through the body was a defining moment.

From that day, he was hooked and that early fascination grew into a career dedicated to advancing Interventional Radiology.
