Ageing and the 3 S’s!

We regularly hear how excessive sun exposure and UV rays are the culprits of accelerated ageing but we hear very little about the role sugar plays. Sun has been touted as the major factor in accelerated and premature skin ageing for years, but sugar is even more damaging.

Sugar causes a process know as Glycosylation to occur in the body. When proteins and lipids come into contact with sugar from the foods we eat. they become ‘glycated’, forming Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). AGE’s are a key factor in the physiology of ageing. The more sugar we eat the more AGE’s we produce.

Collagen and elastin are proteins and when they become glycated their function is impaired, the scaffolding matrix they form losses strength, elasticity is reduced, collagen becomes rigid, weak and susceptible to breaking, the ability to hold water is lessened, skin loses plumpness, deepening lines and causing skin to sag.

Ultimately too much sugar accelerates the ageing process just the same as too much sun!

Bees are important for all of our survival🐝

Happy World Honey Bee Day! 🐝You probably already know that bees are a force to bee reckoned with. They are crucial to our ecosystem, not only for their nectar, but also for their contribution to the production of fruits, nuts, and vegetables.

Unfortunately, climate change, pesticide use, loss of habitat, pollution, and parasites have been causing a steady decline in the bee populations around the world.

What can you do?👇

1. Plant a bee garden - You don’t need a ton of space to grow bee-friendly plants, you can simply use a pot if you lack garden space 🌻

2. Go chemical-free in your gardening - Synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides are very harmful to bees. There are plenty of natural and organic alternatives to use instead (check out neem oil, companion planting, ducks) 🌱

3. Plant trees - When a tree blooms, it provides hundreds, if not thousands, of blossoms to feed from. They are not only a great food source for bees, but also an essential habitat 🌳

4. Create a Bee Bath by filling a shallow bowl with water and adding some stones in it so that they break the water’s surface. Bees will land on the stones to take a much needed refreshing drink💧

This photo was taken by Derry Moroney in December. He is an amateur Australian photographer who has been capturing aerial images of Lake Cakora for about six months.

He explained the phenomenon behind the photo to BBC...

"It's a lake that connects to a beach and also an estuary, and in the estuary and up next to the beach is a bunch of tea trees," he said. "During the big storms, as it comes back in during the high tide, all the tea tree oil runs back into it, and creates the forks and all the hooks of the tree of life."
