and that is why
EVERY TEACHER NEEDS A TEACHER
Continuous learning, growth, and self-care in the Pilates profession are very important. Here is why:
*Skill Enhancement:* If I'm bored, the client will probably be bored too. As Pilates teachers, we need to continually refine and enhance our techniques. By taking classes from other instructors, I can learn new exercises, variations, and teaching methods. Observing the style of another teacher allows me to refer clients to someone who might be a better fit. It also helps to have another set of eyes to point out habits I didn't know I had or recently have not worked on.
*Staying Updated:* The wellness and medical fields are always evolving, and Pilates is no exception. We need to stay updated with the latest research, trends, and advancements in Pilates to provide the best instruction to our clients. It's always inspiring to know a teacher who recently did a course or workshop and to tap into their new excitement as they gladly share what they've learned.
*Preventing Burnout:* Yes, it happens A LOT!! When I get to that point, going into corporate has cross my mind sometimes. But it too shall pass! Teaching Pilates can be physically and mentally incredibly demanding. Engaging in regular sessions with other teachers allows me to focus on myself, to be on the receiving side of Pilates instead of giving all the time.
*Objective Feedback:* Having another teacher observe and critique my form and technique (especially since we can't see our own derriรฉre) provides valuable feedback that helps me improve my own practice and teaching skills.
*Different Perspectives:* As Pilates teachers, we have a unique language we could speak for hours if the audience allows it. Each teacher has their own style based on their background before qualifying, their qualifications, and the years of courses and workshops that follow. Learning from different instructors exposes me to various teaching styles and perspectives, broadening my understanding and approach to not just Pilates, but movement as a whole.
*Inspiration:* Taking classes from other instructors can put an extra bounce in my step. It is definitely inspiring and reinvigorating. It reminds me why I fell in love with Pilates in the first place and reignites my passion for teaching.
*Community and Support:* Being part of a community of teachers provides support and encouragement, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose. It's always welcoming to contact a fellow teacher about their expertise in a certain topic and receive their open-hearted sharing.
*Empathy:* By being a student myself, I can better understand the experiences and challenges my clients face, improving my empathy and effectiveness as a teacher.
*Client Perspective:* Experiencing Pilates from a client's perspective helps me tailor my teaching methods to better meet the needs and expectations of my clients whether it be pure Pilates, stretching, fascia release, trigger point therapy, massage or just a lending ear. ๐
Let the passion live on!

๐ "LET YOUR CORE BLOCK YOUR HEIGHT"
Lynne B
When it comes to prone back extensions, clients often do a back extension without core activation. This is when the back bends at the lower back, allowing the arms and legs to lift off the ground easily. The hip bones get the most pressure because of the anterior tilt in the pelvis. Muscle-wise, back extensors do the most work, deactivating the lower back core. For a healthy spine workout, the back bend should not occur in the lower back.
80% of the world's population experiences some sort of back pain, and when you get a client referral for back pain, it is most often L4-6 that is the problem.
Issues like this cannot be resolved with back extension work without the use of the core. The brain sends signals like a car's gearbox. It needs 1st gear to get going. If you try to get the body going in 2nd gear, it will cheat or create further injury to accomplish what you ask.
To do a core-activated back extension, you need to use the core above (upper back core) and the core below (hip core). These are the 1st gears. The spine should maintain neutral during the back extension.
Prone neutral is where the p***c bone carries the most weight and the hip bones are trying to come off the ground. This allows the spine to lengthen, and during the lengthening process, it automatically curls the tailbone down and towards the belly button at the front. Cue-wise, think of an ice cube inside the belly button and try to get off of it, activating the stomach towards the ceiling. The core muscles that will be working are the TA and Glute Max (deep fibers). Now the spine is core-activated (1st gear) to add movement (2nd gear).
The movement is like a tug-of-war battle where 1st gear should always win. The higher you pick up your back for extension, the harder you should stay away from the ice cube. This will bend the back in a completely different place! Deactivated core back extension happens at L4-6, whereas activated core back extension happens at T10-12. The height of the extension is very limited due to the natural shape of the Thoracic spine.
The cue "Let your core block your height" is about using the skill of dissociation, maintaining a neutral lower back while moving the next core, the upper back. When you are in prone neutral, the upper back will only lift a little bit, and you will feel you cannot go any higher unless you let go of the prone neutral, which changes the location of the bend on the spine.
This cue works for my clients once they understand the imagery and where they should feel the back extension.
Who is going to try this on their clients? ๐ ๐
