3 things to know about getting gel/artificial nails:
In this series I'd like you to get to know more about your own nails and what to expect when getting a Russia/Machine manicure.

3/3 Longevity
It's crucial to know that your nails should last at least 3 weeks without any lifting in the cuticle area.

- It's common for the tips and edges of the nails to wear down and lose shape after use.

- However if there is lifting that clearly allows water to get between the product and the nail plate, please consult your technician.

- The less the natural nail is disturb/buffed the better the product will adhere.

- With a Russian manicure removal is done by filing away colour and lifted areas with an e-file. The clear base is left behind to protect the natural nail underneath.

- Acetone makes the nail plate soft or brittle which reduces adherence.

#2/3 Product
The industry has multiple systems to choose from, the most popular are acrylic and gel systems.

- The healthiest systems are the ones that don't have any strong scent. Anything stronger than regular nail polish can, over a period of time, cause a allergic reaction.

- It's important to know that besides prepping, no other liquid or product should touch your skin.

- You are allowed to ask questions about the product.

-With a Russian manicure we build an arch in the center of the nail for strength and longevity. To accomplish this we turn the hand upside down using gravity to smooth out the surface.

1/3 Prep
The preparation of the natural nail takes the majority of the service time. Working gently and meticulously dead skin cells are removed from the nail plate and cuticle area.

- Prep always starts with sanitizing the hands.

- On a Russian manicure we don't soak your nails in water as this softens the nail plate.

- You might be asked to wash your hands if you've applied cream as this could cause the product to lift.

- There are 4 stages of prep: removal (if you already have product on) buffing, shaping and cutting. An electric nail file and 3 different bits are used to accomplish this as well as a engineered cuticle nipper.

-Prep should be pain free, any burning or stinging sensation from filing is abnormal and you should warn your technician as soon as it hurts.
