🦠🫴 Why we do NOT Soak your feet when doing a Gel Overlay – Part 1

I must admit, I know the soak feels like the best part of a pedi. That warm water, the bubbles... it’s the moment you finally exhale.

So when I say; "We don’t soak before or after Gel Application at Refined", I get the side-eye 😓

Here’s the thing about gel:

⚠️ It needs a bone-dry nail to stick properly.

• When you soak, your toenails act like tiny sponges.
• They swell up with water, then slowly shrink back as they dry. Your gel doesn’t shrink with them.

So what happens?

It lifts. It chips. It peels.
You leave with a perfect pedi on Monday and by Friday it’s catching on your sheets. We call it the Short-Lived Gel Graveyard, because that’s exactly where soaked gel pedis go to die.
You’re paying for 6 weeks of wear, and soaking robs you of it.

⚠️ But it’s not just about how long it lasts.
⚠️ Here’s the big one we really worry about: Fungus.

🫴 We call it the Fungi Forest Retreat because that’s what you create when you seal moisture under gel.
🧫 Warm, dark, damp.

• Fungal spores from athlete’s foot or toenail fungus can get trapped under there when you soak first.
• Once that gel is cured, the fungus has a sealed, protected home to grow for weeks. You won’t even see it until the gel comes off.

⚠️ It’s about what’s happening under that gel.

🦠 Spa tubs with jets, even when cleaned, are called a Bacteria Buffet Basin for a reason.

Jets and pipes trap bacteria that love warm water. Soaking softens your skin and nails, which makes it easier for bacteria to get in.

If your gel lifts even a tiny bit later, you’ve created the perfect damp pocket for bacteria to throw a party. Ever heard of green nail syndrome? That’s usually why it happens.

⚠️ The last kicker? The damage doesn’t stop once the gel is on.

So even after your pedi, soaking makes your nails swell under the gel. This constant swelling and shrinking is called Post-Seal Swelling Strike.

• It stresses the bond, weakens your natural nail plate, and leads to chipping or peeling.
