FNB Appoints Lytania Johnson as its New CEO

When it came to money, Eldorado Park’s Lytania Johnson had always been a responsible young person. Her first job was as a part-time worker at Jet Stores, working weekends and holidays. With the money she earned, she gave some of it to her mom for ‘board’ and the rest she saved up to buy the CD player she’d always wanted. Now, if you think that this sounds like someone that can be trusted to run a bank, you would be right. In fact, given her resume, she might just be the best person for the job.

On Monday it was announced that Lytania would become the new CEO of FNB. She will be in charge of a company with a market value of at least R250 billion, annual earnings of R23 billion, assets worth at least R1.4 trillion and a base of 12 million customers.

Now, you might ask what exactly, other than being a responsible young person, qualifies her for the job.

After matriculating as the head girl and with distinction, Lytania registered for and graduated with an accounting degree from the University of South Africa. She then got a job at FNB in the Finance Department where she found out that she was really good at managing risk and apparently, the bosses at FNB agreed.

She was promoted to Risk Manager then the Chief Risk Officer for Retail and then the Chief Risk Officer for International Business. It was in 2015 that she became the CEO of FNB’s eWallet Business, where she was tasked with creating the bridge between ewallet and banking. If you’ve ever used FNB’s eWallet service and want to know where it came from, well, now you know.

She was then promoted to headquarters of the company that owns FNB, First Rand, as the Chief Ethics officer and in 2017, she was promoted to FNB’s executive team as the Chief Risk officer. It was in 2023 that she became the CEO in charge of the Personal Segment, a job she holds to this very day. That is of course, until she takes up her new role as FNB CEO.

Now, Lytania isn’t just about business. The middle child of 3 siblings is herself the proud mother of 3 children and despite her heavy schedule, makes a point of spending time with them and her husband. She is also a gifted singer, having started at the age of 3, using her vocal talents as part of the Johannesburg regional choir and the church choir. To this very day, she still enjoys singing at church and is often invited to give inspirational sermons.

Lytania will be taking up her new role as CEO at the end of 2026, when the current CEO, Harry Kellan, steps down.
