Refresh the water regularly, trim the stem at an angle, remove any leaves sitting below the waterline, and keep your vase away from direct sunlight and heat.

As the days pass, your protea will slowly open, soften and transform, holding its beauty in a way only nature can.

Using dried botanicals, this piece was transformed into something lasting, delicate and full of character: a handmade lamp that carries the texture, colour and softness of nature into the home.

For Jessica Jacob, growing proteas is more than a job. It is a family legacy.
For four generations, the Jacob family has worked alongside the Michell family, helping to grow fruit and proteas.

From Jessica's grandparents to her parents, and now Jessica and her own son, each generation has played a part in nurturing the land and continuing a tradition that began in the first half of the 1900s.

Stories like Jessica's remind us that South Africa's fynbos industry is built not only on extraordinary flowers, but on extraordinary people. It is through generations of dedication, shared knowledge, and meaningful employment that our flower farms continue to strengthen families and uplift rural communities.

Behind every beautiful stem is a story worth celebrating.

Give new life to a dried brown protea and transform it into a striking botanical centerpiece.

Start by gently removing the outer leaves to reveal the soft, textured, nude-coloured inner thistles hidden within.

For the base, use the bold architectural leaves of an Agave plant (handle with care – those thorns are sharp!).

Create small holes along the surface and insert shortened protea heads at varying heights, spacing them unevenly for a more natural, artistic effect.

Now it's time to play with texture. Add plants or cuttings that won't wilt – We chose a selection of succulents. Arrange them in clusters to create depth and interest.

For a touch of whimsy, we added delicate Gaura flowers, bringing softness and movement to the arrangement.

Finish with candlesticks or votive candles, and your masterpiece is complete.

High in the rugged Groot Winterhoek Mountains, where winters are harsh and only the toughest proteas survive, grows a story that is every bit as remarkable as the flowers themselves.

For generations, Mountain Dew farm was farmed as part of Berghoff, a fynbos farm established by Denis Shaw (Margot’s father) and now owned by Marius and Margot Huysamer. But in 2008, something extraordinary happened. 𝐀 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬.

Through the Bergland Ontwikkelingstrust and with support from the LRAD programme 𝟕𝟒 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟕𝟓-𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐰 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦. What began as a dream became a reality rooted in hard work, determination, and a deep connection to the land.

Today, 34 beneficiaries remain. They don't simply farm the land – they live it. The mountains, the soil, and the flowers have become part of their identity. Together with Marius and Margot, they cultivate exceptional proteas, pincushions, and conebushes, including rare varieties found nowhere else.

This is also a story of women. Behind the flowers are many dedicated women whose passion, resilience, and hard work have helped shape the success of Mountain Dew.

And what a success it has become.

In 2026, flowers grown on Mountain Dew made the journey from the mountains of the Western Cape to the world-famous Chelsea Flower Show in the United Kingdom, proudly featured in South Africa's award-winning display.
