Part 1: The New School đź’”
Thato thought the new school would be a fresh start. She walked into the classroom with her best smile, hoping to fit in. But instead of welcoming her, the whispers began:
“Look at her shoes, they’re old.”
“She sounds funny when she talks.”
At first, it was just words. But then things got worse. One boy tripped her on purpose in the corridor and everyone laughed. Another girl poured juice into her bag during break and shouted, “Oops, sorry, new girl!” Her books were ruined.
During lunch, they would push her tray away and tell her, “You don’t belong here.” Sometimes, when the teacher wasn’t looking, they threw tiny paper balls at her head.
Every night she cried quietly into her pillow, asking herself, “What did I do wrong? Why don’t they like me?” She wanted to tell her mom, but she was too scared she would sound weak.
