Behind the Chair — A Letter You Didn’t Know You Needed
Somewhere between the mirror and the silence,
between the cape wrapped around your shoulders and the pieces of hair falling to the floor,
there’s a story you haven’t fully told yet.
I see it sometimes — not in your words,
but in the way you pause before you speak,
in the way your eyes soften when certain topics come too close to home.
You sit here for a haircut,
but what you’re really carrying… is much heavier.
There’s growth in you.
Not the loud kind that announces itself,
but the quiet, uncomfortable kind —
the kind that asks you to outgrow versions of yourself
you once thought you’d be forever.
And with that growth comes guilt.
Guilt for what you tolerated.
Guilt for what you didn’t know back then.
Guilt for the way you stayed too long,
or maybe even left too soon.
But here’s the truth no one tells you:
You were doing the best you could
with the version of yourself you had at the time.
You weren’t meant to have all the answers.
Still, we try to make sense of it all, don’t we?
We justify.
We shift blame.
We replay moments like scenes in a movie,
changing angles, changing words —
hoping one version will finally feel easier to live with.
It doesn’t.
Because healing isn’t found in rewriting the past.
It’s found in accepting it.
And acceptance… that’s where things start to change.
That’s where self-love quietly steps in —
not as confidence, not as perfection,
but as permission.
Permission to feel everything.
The confusion.
The anger.
The loneliness.
Even the fear.
Especially the fear.
Because stepping back into the world —
meeting new people, opening your heart again —
that takes courage most people don’t talk about.
It’s terrifying to be seen again.
To risk being misunderstood again.
To trust… again.
But there’s something beautiful about the way you’re trying.
Even if you don’t fully believe in it yet.
Even if part of you is still holding onto old wounds,
still bracing for what could go wrong.
You’re still showing up.
And that matters more than you think.
Forgiveness will come — not all at once,
but in layers.
Forgiving them.
Forgiving yourself.
Letting go of the need to make everything make sense.
Because not everything will.
And that’s okay.
You’re not here to be perfect.
You’re here to evolve.
To soften where you’ve hardened.
To rebuild where you’ve broken.
To love — not the way you once did,
but deeper, wiser, and more honest this time.
So as you sit here, watching your reflection change,
remember this:
You are allowed to outgrow your past.
You are allowed to start again.
You are allowed to choose yourself —
without guilt, without apology.
And maybe… just maybe…
this version of you —
the one still figuring it out, still healing, still becoming —
is the most beautiful one yet.
