I was completely blown away this week by a few things...and by far the best of them all was when I received word from Delia of “A Few Grey Hairs” that my wig was ready 🎉🎉🎉

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but when I walked in for my fitting I saw straight away that it was definitely my hair...I got quite tearful when I had to drive home without it as it needed to be adjusted slightly, it felt like I was leaving behind a bit of me that I had forgotten about and then was reunited with before having to leave it behind again 🤣
Suffice to say I felt nothing but euphoric when I returned on Wednesday to collect it!

Firstly I have to say a massive THANK YOU to Liz and Delia. Their vision for “A Few Grey Hairs” is truly inspiring. Please follow them on Facebook and support their cause! What these two ladies do is nothing short of amazing!!! If you want to donate your hair, this is THE place to do it!
What so many people do not realize is that at most “shavathons” and hair-cutting events, the hair that gets chopped off is essentially swept up and thrown away...(or sold to mop up oil spills, sometimes it’s even made into rugs...😳)
It is far easier to collect funds than it is to make human hair wigs so more often than not the intention of these events is just to raise funds and awareness. The funds raised at these events go towards synthetic wigs and other costs/purposes for which the fundraiser is intended. Which is awesome 👏🏻 I do not think that this is in any way, shape, or form a bad thing at all because these events have great atmosphere and manage to raise a lot of money for cancer patients. Furthermore it is often a symbolic act of solidarity and support for cancer patients which is so appreciated by those of us suffering this horrible disease and its treatment...

However...
IF you have been growing your hair and want your hair to go SPECIFICALLY towards someone who genuinely needs a human hair wig due to cancer and other illnesses, it has to be harvested properly and manufactured by the right people. I genuinely did not know this until it came time for me to lose my own hair...I think that if someone is cutting off their hair for a purpose, that it is important that donors are aware of where their locks are going to...also, you don’t have to necessarily chop all of your hair off to benefit someone and contribute!

Liz and Delia can harvest a small ponytail from a position on your scalp that you would never notice AND what’s more amazing is it will definitely go towards someone in need, be that directly woven into a wig or made into beautiful extensions and sold in order to finance a wig. This ultimately results in someone who really needs it getting a beautiful wig made from human hair.
Recipients are not just cancer patients, but there are so many young girls out there who permanently lose their hair due to illness who would benefit hugely from your support.

They have created an app called “Hairs with Love”, which you can download from the App Store. Here, you can create your own profile and donate your hair to specific individual or you can contribute financially if you’d prefer that.

In my case, they harvested my hair and then raised funds with the help of the girls and families of Kingsmead Girls College and King David School. A HUGE thank you to these girls who donated their harvested hair!
Then of course a BIG THANK YOU to all of my followers who made contributions towards my wig, this was allocated towards some of the manufacturing costs of my wig. The App will be updated soon to reflect all the contributions that were made 😊

A full human hair wig such as mine would cost a minimum of R20k as it is a hugely labour intensive process...they HAND KNOT the hair, a few stands at a time so you can imagine how long that takes...the mind boggles 🤯 Liz is truly an artist 👩‍🎨
I would never have been able to afford this in my wildest dreams and would have had to part with my hair in a very traumatic fashion...
Although I never completely lost my hair, it is very thin and I miss my long hair very much! More significantly though, Laurienne was extremely upset when I cut off all my hair. She still draws pictures of me with long hair and refuses to adjust her worldview to one where I have short hair.

She was beyond excited when she me wearing my wig and couldn’t stop hugging and loving me, trying to smell it to see if it still smelt like me and is positively dying to brush it 😊 All that extra love from a sick little girl with tonsillitis resulted in me waking up with Strep throat yesterday morning, so I feel positively hideous especially in this heat🤒🥵🤧

I also asked for some special embroidery that is just for her on the inside of my wig, because I want her to always have this part of me...when I am in hospital she can look at it and smell it, and then I can also wear it when I am feeling less than fabulous after my transplant 😊 I also look forward to wearing it out and about, especially on days when I feel particularly gross and just want to feel a tiny slice of “normal” again...even if it is for only a few hours!

My mom took some photos of us in their garden on the afternoon that I got my wig (thanks mom!)...I never realized just how much I missed my own hair until I got it back and until I saw these photos, I just look like myself again and my smile seems to come from a place of deeper happiness than it has emanated from of late...

In a lot of ways I have gotten used to having very short hair...heaven knows it’s cooler! I love how quick I can get ready now (and I know my husband loves this as well 🤣) and enjoy how Laurienne’s laughs at how completely crazy it looks in the mornings, because it truly has a mind of its own with this new chemo 🤪
BUT...it’s not me...
I hadn’t realized how much I missed it until I got it back...
I am so grateful to everyone for all of their contributions...be it financially, hair donations or their time and expertise, thank you for giving me a part of my identity back...I will treasure and look after it always!

I cannot advocate strongly enough for these ladies, they truly will treat your hair with love and all of that love will be felt by the recipient at the end of the day!

Thank you again for all the love and energy that went into my wig, I am beyond blessed for this incredible gift 😍 and I am pretty sure you can tell from the look on my face, just how extremely happy I was 😀

In this photo our client used her own hair in the manufacture of a wig that Liz and Delia made up specially for her. She chose the wording 'BY HIS GRACE I AM SAVED" which is a lovely affermation for her and her family.
