If you’re in the mood for a little day of TLC, you’ll need to make a choice between a facial or a spray tan – you can’t do both on the same day and here’s why.

Having a facial before a spray tan will cause the tanning solution to go into open pores on your face and create pseudo blackhead like spots, which is never awesome.

It is thus recommended that you always wait a day or two after having a facial to allow your skin to relax and rejuvenate to ensure an even finish when you indulge in a golden glow.

Beyond all the skin preparation tips you’re given to follow before your tan, here’s a bit of what you can expect during your actual spray tan session.

Obviously, the more skin you bare the better your tan coverage will be, but your comfort is always a priority so speak to your technician about what to wear while being sprayed.

Your tan technician will also discuss your options on how dark you want your tan to be based on your skin tone and your general preference. If your tan is for a special occasion, you want it to last longer or you want it to look more natural, be sure to bring this to the technician’s attention at this stage.

You will then step into the tanning tent or pod. The tan solution is applied using a spray gun to your body and face in the form of a dispersed mist. Be prepared, it’s usually quite cold which is actually rather lovely in the Summer months but a little bit nippy in the winter.

Every technician has their own technique, but they usually work their way down your body to start. Don’t stress, you will be given clear instructions on how to stand and when to turn throughout the process to make sure you’re evenly covered. You may feel a little silly or embarrassed when asked such things as to ‘lean your bum out’ but go with it as this is to make sure that you’re not left with any white patches that can be caused by creases in your skin. You may also be asked to claw your hands to get between the knuckle creases too.

Every technician is different so once the spray part is complete, some may buff your skin with a mitt before drying you with an air hose whereas others may skip the buff and only dry. You may also be treated to a powdering in certain areas which is to help reduce your tan being negatively affected in places that are prone to sweating during the development time. Spray tans and sweat are not good friends. A good technician will always wipe down the palms of your hands and clean your nails for you to complete the process.

You can then get dressed in loose, dark clothing and flip flops and remain as such for a minimum of 4 to 6 hours to reduce the instance of your tan rubbing off and streaking while it develops. This is why it’s best not to make big plans for the day of your spray tan. For optimum results, try not to ‘disrupt’ your tan development for the full 8 hours.

Don’t freak out – your developing tan will probably appear darker than the finished result. Your first shower will remove the bronzer to reveal its true colour. You may also smell a bit weird during the development time. Spray some perfume on your clothes, NOT your skin, should you wish to disguise this.
