ECZ sets January 29 for Kasama mayoral by-election

THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has set Thursday, January 29, 2026, as the date for the Kasama Mayoral by-election in Northern Province.

The by – election follows the demise of Ms Theresa Kolala who held the office until her demise on December 5.

ECZ Corporate Affairs Manager Patricia Luhanga said polling will take place from 06:00 hours to 18:00 hours in Kasama District.

“Notice is hereby given to the general public that the Electoral Commission of Zambia has prescribed Thursday, 29th January 2026 as the date on which to hold the Mayoral by-election for Kasama Municipal Council in Kasama District of Northern Province,” Ms Luhanga said.

She said nominations for aspiring candidates will be conducted on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, while campaigns will officially begin on Wednesday, December 31, 2025 at 14:00 hours and end at 18:00 hours on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

“The polls will take place from 06:00 hours to 18:00 hours on Thursday, 29th January, 2026,” she said, “the by-election in Kasama has arisen due to the death of the Kasama Mayor, Ms Theresa Kolala of the Patriotic Front (PF) on Friday, 5th December, 2025,” she said.

She said aspiring candidates are required to lodge completed and attested statutory declarations and nomination papers on nomination day between 09:00 hours and 15:00 hours.

“Aspiring candidates in the by-election should lodge completed and attested statutory declaration and nomination papers subscribed before a Magistrate, Local Court Magistrate, Head of a Government Primary or Secondary School, Principal of a College, Commissioner for Oaths, Election Officer or Returning Officer,” Ms Luhanga said.

She said candidates will be required to pay non-refundable nomination fees of K15,000 for male candidates, K13,500 for female candidates, K10,000 for youths and K10,000 for persons with disabilities.

“All candidates in the by-election must also present certified copies of their Grade 12 certificates, as a minimum academic qualification or equivalent,” she said.

Ms Luhanga further said adoption certificates for candidates sponsored by political parties must bear signatures and full names of the party president and secretary general, or the secretary general alone.

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has terminated the appointment of the Zambia Public Procurement Authority director general Idah Chella.

A 21-year-old woman of Mafinga district of Muchinga province has been arrested for indecently assaulting a 10-year-old boy.

It is alleged that Selena Mfune lured the victim into a bush where she had carnal knowledge of him.

Muchinga Province Deputy Commanding officer Ronald Zambo said the report was given by the victims 55-year-old biological father.

He said the incident occurred on April 3rd, this year in Gwebe village area of Mafinga.

"Facts of the matter are that the biological father to the victim whose mother left for Malawi on a business trip two weeks before the incident, had on the material date around 10:30 hours he left home and went to his farm leaving behind his two sons, the victim and his young brother aged five," he said.
