pregnancy and precipitous labour
helping expectant mother's know and understand what precipitate labour is and what to expect ...
Pregnancy (or gestation) is calculated as 40 weeks and starts from the first day of your last menstrual period. Pregnancy is classified into 3 stages known as trimesters. The gender and inherited characteristics of the baby are decided at the moment of conception.
Here's how precipitous labor contractions can be differentiated from typical labor contractions.
Normal labor contractions: Typically, labor contractions build up over time. They begin as short sensations that feel similar to menstrual cramps, and they gradually grow stronger and last longer.
Precipitous labor contractions: You won't have a break in between contractions, and they feel intense from the beginning, including an urge to bear down and push.
Precipitous Labor Symptoms.
With precipitous labor, symptoms come on suddenly and intensely. You may feel several contractions that occur back-to-back. Some people experience a singular, continuous contraction or abrupt pressure. Either way, the rapid cervix dilation may cause pain and the urge to push.
What are the symptoms of a precipitate labor?
Signs of precipitous labor include: The sudden onset of very intense contractions. Very little time between contractions for recovery. Strong urge to push, which often feels like the need for a bowel movement
Typical labor lasts between six and 18 hours on average. While fast labor might sound better than labor that lasts several hours (or days), precipitous labor comes with risks to both the birth parent and baby.
