🍷 Alcohol & Health: The Facts You Need to Know

For years, we’ve heard that a glass of red wine is good for the heart. But the science has shifted – and the evidence is clear.

The short version: Less is better. None is best.

Here’s what the latest research tells us 👇

🚨 The Cancer Risk Is Real

The World Health Organization has stated that no amount of alcohol is safe for our health. Alcohol is linked to at least seven types of cancer – including breast, colon, liver, and mouth/throat cancers. Even low levels of drinking increase cancer risk.

In 2020 alone, alcohol was linked to 741,000 new cancer cases worldwide – about 4% of all new diagnoses.

❤️ The “Heart-Healthy” Myth Is Outdated

The idea that moderate drinking protects your heart? Outdated. Earlier studies had major flaws – they compared moderate drinkers to people who had quit due to illness, making drinkers look healthier by comparison. When you account for those biases, the protective effect disappears.

The CDC now confirms: even moderate drinking doesn’t lower your risk of death compared to not drinking at all.

🧠 It Affects Your Brain Too

A 2025 study of over half a million adults found that dementia risk rises with every increase in alcohol intake. Heavy drinkers had over 40% higher risk. Alcohol also disrupts sleep, increases anxiety, and makes it harder to manage stress.

👩 Women Face Higher Risks

Even one drink or less per day can be a significant health risk for women. Between 2016–2021, alcohol-related deaths increased 35% in women (vs. 27% in men).

The Bottom Line

The evidence is overwhelming: alcohol is a preventable cause of disease and death. The WHO estimates it accounts for nearly 1 in 10 deaths among people aged 15–49.

What you can do:

· Drink less – any reduction helps
· Have alcohol-free days each week
· If you don’t drink, don’t start

Your health is one of your greatest assets. Choose wisely. 💚

🌿 Spirulina: Food as Medicine, but Know the Facts 🌿

In Lifestyle Medicine, we look for whole-food solutions with real evidence. Spirulina checks many boxes—with a few important nuances:

✅ What the science supports:

· Potent antioxidant & anti-inflammatory (phycocyanin)
· Binds to heavy metals (detox support)
· Nutrient-dense (iron, B-vitamins, protein)

⚠️ What to know:

· Not a reliable B12 source (it's the inactive form)
· Not a complete protein on its own—pair with grains/legumes
· Quality matters—contamination risks are real

🥤 Smart use: Add 1–2g to smoothies, but don't rely on it as your sole protein or B12 source.

Choose organic, third-party tested brands. Evidence-based, not hype-based.

Purslane: The Backyard "W**d" That's a Nutritional Powerhouse

In Lifestyle Medicine, we focus on using whole-food, plant-based nutrition to prevent and treat disease. Sometimes, the most powerful foods are the ones growing right under our noses. Purslane is a perfect example.

Often dismissed as a garden w**d, purslane is actually a succulent vegetable with a slightly salty and sour flavor. It can be eaten raw in salads or cooked like spinach.

A Nutritional Profile That's Hard to Beat

For only 16 calories per 100 grams, purslane is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet:

· Omega-3 Fatty Acids: It is one of the best plant sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), containing 5-7 times more than spinach.
· Vitamins & Minerals: An excellent source of Vitamin A (26% DV), Vitamin C (35% DV), magnesium (17% DV), potassium (14% DV), and iron (11% DV).
· Antioxidants: Rich in glutathione, beta-carotene, and alpha-tocopherol.

Evidence-Based Health Benefits

Emerging research validates purslane's health-promoting properties:

· Cardiometabolic Health: A 2025 meta-analysis found that purslane consumption significantly reduces body weight, BMI, and systolic blood pressure. It also shows promise for blood sugar control.
· Antioxidant & Anti-inflammatory: Its compounds help fight oxidative stress and inflammation, which are root causes of chronic disease.
· Liver Health: A clinical trial showed daily purslane seeds reduced oxidative stress in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

A "Vegetable for Long Life"

Purslane has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it has been used for over 1,500 years to treat various ailments, underscoring its long-standing reputation as a healing plant.

Conclusion

Purslane is a safe, free, and sustainable "functional food" that can be easily incorporated into a healthy diet. Next time you see it, consider adding it to your plate—it's a simple, powerful step toward better health.
