Part 2: Screening and Laboratory Testing for Prostate Health
Understanding Risk Factors
- Advanced Age: Men over 50, particularly those over 65, are at increased risk of developing prostate issues due to age-related glandular growth.
- Family History: A family history of prostate cancer elevates an individual's risk, highlighting the potential role of genetic factors.
- Ethnicity: Prostate cancer disproportionately affects men of Black African descent, who may develop the disease at a younger age due to genetic predisposition and healthcare access factors.
- Genetic Factors: Inherited mutations in genes like BRCA1 and BRCA2, known to increase the risk of breast cancer, also heighten the risk of prostate cancer.
Lifestyle Influences: Diets rich in red and processed meats, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles may contribute to the development of aggressive prostate cancer.

This June, we are highlighting Men's Health and Cervical Cancer Awareness. Cervical cancer claims 350,000 lives annually, with up to 90% of cases preventable through screening and HPV vaccination. Prostate cancer affects 1.4 million men globally each year, but early detection through screening boosts the 5 year survival rate to nearly 100%. Let's protect loved ones by prioritising screenings. Encourage the women in your life to get screened for cervical cancer and men to prioritise prostate health with a PSA blood test.

We were proud to be part of the annual Masawara Career Guidance Expo at Mutasa Primary School. It was an incredible day connecting with future scientists and healthcare professionals from 15 primary schools and 17 high schools across the district. We loved sharing insights into the world of medical laboratory science and inspiring young minds to explore careers in diagnostics and healthcare. A big thank you to the organisers, educators, and all the curious students who stopped by our stand. The future is bright.
