She suffered devastating complications following an injectable treatment performed by someone who was not a regulated healthcare professional. The exact substance injected remains unconfirmed. The treatment happened in a home. But a storefront, polished branding or a “medical clinic” sign does not guarantee that the person holding the needle is a regulated healthcare professional.

Verify the person not just the premises.
Registered Nurses Registered Practical Nurses Nurse Practitioners and MD’s are accountable to strict professional standards. Nursing registration does not give independent authority to prescribe Botox or initiate injectable aesthetic treatments without appropriate authorization. This is not new. Let me say it again. RNs and RPNs can not initiate treatment.

Ontario’s updated requirements take effect March 1, 2027, including client-specific orders for aesthetic services involving prescription drugs or controlled acts. But accountability, appropriate authorization and informed consent should already be part of your care. Under the updated standards, an authorized prescriber, such as an MD or NP, must assess you in person or virtually, as appropriate before issuing your client-specific order. Whether onsite or remote, a medical director’s name does not replace your assessment. You give informed consent. Your providers must explain the treatment, risks, benefits and alternatives.

Before treatment:
• Verify professional registration and experience.
• Ask who assesses you and authorizes treatment.
• Know what product is being injected.
• Ask about emergency management and follow-up.
Complications can occur even in qualified hands. Recognizing and responding promptly matters.

Tressa Louise Ann, thank you for raising awareness. The responsibility for safe, honest care belongs to the practitioner. You deserved that care.
