Deuterium (²H or D) is a stable, non-radioactive isotope of hydrogen. It carries a neutron that ordinary hydrogen — protium (¹H) — doesn’t have, making it roughly twice the mass of the atom it substitutes for. No other element has an isotope gap that wide.

It’s not rare in the sense of exotic. It’s rare in the sense of background. Roughly 1 in every 6,400 hydrogen atoms in Earth’s water is deuterium — about 155 ppm in ocean water (VSMOW, the international reference standard). Every glass you’ve ever poured contained it.
