It fuels hydrogen bombs. It's in every glass of water on Earth.

What is deuterium? It's heavy hydrogen: a hydrogen atom with an extra neutron, which makes it about twice as heavy as normal hydrogen. It's used as fusion fuel in thermonuclear weapons, and it's also a natural part of all water. About 1 in every 6,420 hydrogen atoms in the water you drink is deuterium.

Is deuterium radioactive? No. It's a stable isotope of hydrogen.

Why does it matter? Your mitochondria make energy using a flow of hydrogen, and researchers are studying how the heavier kind affects that process. some believe it causes your ATP motor to jam and stutter.

Deuterium-depleted water (DDW) is water with less of it. Litewater has up to 97% less deuterium than regular water.

Your blood carries more deuterium than calcium. Roughly six to seven times more.

Deuterium is hydrogen's heavy isotope, with one extra neutron. About 1 in every 6,600 hydrogen atoms in natural water is deuterium, and since blood plasma is mostly water, that works out to about 15 to 17 millimoles of deuterium per liter.

Compare that with the minerals your blood work actually tracks. Calcium sits around 2.2 to 2.6 millimoles per liter, potassium 3.5 to 5, glucose about 4 to 5.5, and magnesium under 1. Count for count, deuterium outnumbers calcium six to seven times, potassium and glucose three to five times, and magnesium 15 to 20 times.

That doesn't make deuterium dangerous by default. It's been in every drop of water since before life began. It does make it hard to call trivial. Researchers in deutenomics propose that your body's deuterium load is associated with how efficiently your mitochondria make energy.

Almost all the deuterium in the universe was made in a few minutes, 13.8 billion years ago.

Deuterium is hydrogen’s heavy isotope: one proton plus one neutron. It formed during Big Bang nucleosynthesis, the first minutes after the Big Bang, when the young universe was hot and dense enough to fuse protons and neutrons together. Then the window closed. Stars don’t make deuterium. They burn it. Nothing since has added meaningfully to the supply, which is why astronomers use the amount left over to measure conditions in the early universe.

Some of that primordial deuterium ended up in Earth’s water. About 1 in every 6,600 hydrogen atoms in natural water is deuterium, twice as heavy as the ordinary hydrogen your mitochondria use to make energy. Researchers in deutenomics propose that this heavier hydrogen adds drag to that machinery. It’s a hypothesis still being studied.

Ice made from heavy water sinks. Drop a cube of frozen D2O into a glass of ordinary water and it goes straight to the bottom, while every normal ice cube floats.

Heavy water is water built with deuterium instead of ordinary hydrogen. Deuterium is hydrogen's heavy isotope: same chemistry, one extra neutron. That neutron makes a heavy water molecule about 11% heavier than regular water, so its ice ends up denser than liquid water.

The extra neutron changes more than buoyancy. Heavy water freezes at about 3.8°C instead of 0°C, boils at a higher temperature, and slows many chemical reactions. Chemists call that slowdown the kinetic isotope effect, and it's the reason biologists study deuterium at all.

Every glass of water on Earth carries a trace of it. About 1 in every 6,600 hydrogen atoms in natural water is deuterium, almost all of it as HDO: one heavy hydrogen in an otherwise ordinary water molecule. That's nowhere near enough to sink an ice cube, and it doesn't make tap water dangerous. The question researchers in deutenomics are asking is whether a lifetime of that trace matters to the hydrogen-driven machinery inside your mitochondria. It's still being studied.

In 2007, biochemist Abdullah Olgun modeled what happens when a deuterium ion, instead of ordinary hydrogen, lands on the binding site that drives the rotor. His proposal: the heavier ion lets go more slowly, which could slow the motor. It’s a theoretical model, not a measurement in people, but it’s a cornerstone of deutenomics, the field studying deuterium’s role in cellular energy.
