Split Pea Soup ๐Ÿฅฃ
Split pea soup has ancient roots because dried peas were eaten by the Greeks and Romans thousands of years ago. Boiling split peas created an inexpensive, filling meal that could feed many people. Northern European versions later added smoked ham or pork. Immigrants carried their recipes to America, where ham-and-pea soup became a comforting household favourite.
Kale Salad ๐Ÿฅฌ
Kale has been cultivated around the Mediterranean and Europe for more than 2,000 years. However, raw kale salad became especially fashionable in the United States during the early twenty-first century. Chefs discovered that massaging chopped kale with oil, lemon juice, and salt softened its tough leaves. Its popularity grew alongside modern interest in nutritious plant-based meals.
Sloppy Joe ๐Ÿ”
The Sloppy Joe appeared in the United States during the early twentieth century. One popular story credits an Iowa cook named Joe, who reportedly added tomato sauce to loose-meat sandwiches around 1930. The mixture of seasoned ground beef, onions, and tangy sauce was served inside a bun, creating an affordable and wonderfully messy meal.
BLT Sandwich ๐Ÿฅ“
The BLT developed from late nineteenth-century British and American bacon sandwiches and club sandwiches. Recipes combining bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise appeared in American cookbooks during the early twentieth century. The initials โ€œBLTโ€ became widely used after World War II, when lettuce and tomatoes became available throughout the year and diners wanted a quick way to order it.
